With its historic Market Street, antique shops, fascinating boutiques, and overall ambiance, Wailuku offers insight into an earlier part of Maui history. Situated at the foot of the West Maui Mountains with the picturesque Iao Valley stretching beyond, the town has traded its place as Maui's main tourist destination of the early 20th century for its modern day comfort found in the unique architecture of its buildings, condos, and homes and surrounding natural sites such as the Tropical Gardens of Maui. The town's connection with earlier times is not only felt in the historic structures of Kaahumanu Church and Bailey House, but also in the nearby ancient Hawaiian temples of Haleki Heiau and the Pihanalani Heiau. Today, Wailuku condos and homes in such areas as the Sand Hills showcase some of the best examples of plantation and Kama'aina (Hawaiian born) style architecture throughout Maui. As host site of the island's State and County government offices, Wailuku's job market welcomes both commuting and local-resident workers. Even though some Wailuku condo and homeowners commute for work, the number of Maui residents commuting into the town is more than double the number traveling to nearby communities for work each day. |
